Corona SDA 2009 Mission Trip to Iquitos, Peru
People of Peru Project
General Information
Iquitos, Peru is located at the headwaters of the Amazon River. It is a city of 450,000 people surrounded by thousands of square miles of jungle. This city is plagued by poverty and all that comes with it. Disease, parasites, malnutrition, rampant tooth decay and premature death are but a few. In any third world country in conditions like this, the children suffer the most. Many are left to survive on the streets or in the surrounding jungle with no parent or family unit to provide care.
This year's mission team will be constructing an addition to a crisis foster care facility for children who need a safe place to go during turbulent times. The facility also provides a place for young mothers, who for reasons beyond their control need a safe place to raise their babies and call home. Educational and vocational training is also provided so they will be equipped to face the challenges of adult life.
Our activities in Iquito's will include construction, feed the street kids, health education, dental clinic, medical clinic hopefully, and VBS.
The crisis center will provide our lodging, food, transportation, interpreters and excursions. We will be taken on a 5 hours excursion up the Amazon River, stopping at the Bora tribe to see their native dress and dances. We can trade for their handy crafts which helps keep their kids educated. Another stop will be at a village bakery to buy the best sweet bread that you've ever had, see dolphins and nap in a hammock on board the boat. Once you get to the jungle you will be going to a typical village that People of Peru helps support and spend the night on the round house platform complete with flush toilets.
